Some days with type 1 diabetes feel heavier than others.
Not because anything dramatic has happened…
But because it’s all been building up in the background.
The thinking.
Decisions.
And the constant awareness.
👉 This is what makes it so mentally draining.
Is this feeling close to home? It’s in no way simply about just trying harder – and more about coping better with the mental side of T1D. That’s why I’ve put together – The 7 Things About Type 1 Diabetes No One Tells You but You Deserve to Know. Get it here – it’s free
🧩 1. Lower the Bar (Just for Today)
You don’t need to do everything perfectly.
You don’t need to “get back on track”.
Just aim for:
👉 good enough
That might mean:
- checking once instead of over-checking
- making one small adjustment instead of fixing everything
- focusing on the next step — not the whole day
Sometimes the pressure is what makes everything feel harder.
🧩 2. Reduce One Layer of Thinking
A lot of the overwhelm comes from constant mental effort.
So instead of trying to manage everything…
👉 remove one layer
That could be:
- keeping meals simple
- sticking to familiar choices
- avoiding unnecessary decisions
Less thinking = less mental load
🧩 3. Give Yourself a Break (Without Guilt)
Not switching off completely…
But stepping back slightly.
That might mean:
- taking a mental pause
- not over-analysing every number
- letting things be “okay” for a while
👉 This is where things start to feel lighter.
🔁 Why This Matters
Trying harder isn’t always the answer.
Sometimes what actually helps is:
👉 reducing pressure
👉 simplifying things
👉 giving yourself space
If trying harder has been making things worse, you might relate to this:

🔗 If This Feels Familiar
If this kind of overwhelm has been building up for a while, you might recognise it here:

If things have been building up and starting to feel harder to manage, it might help to talk it through.
🔚 FINAL THOUGHT
You don’t need to fix everything today.
You just need to make things feel a little lighter.
