Trying Harder Won’t Fix T1D Burnout and What Helps Instead

When things start slipping with T1D, the advice is usually the same:

👉 try harder

Be more consistent.
Stay on top of things.
Get back in control.

And for a while, you might push yourself to do exactly that.

But if you’ve been there, you’ll know…

👉 it doesn’t last

The Problem With “Trying Harder”

Trying harder sounds logical.

But it assumes the problem is effort.

That you’re not doing enough.
That you just need more discipline.

👉 This is what people get wrong.

Because burnout doesn’t come from a lack of effort.

It comes from too much of it.

And you guessed it – going overkill with trying harder usually leads to overwhelm. And if this is feeling close to the bone you might identify with this:

🔁 You’ve Already Been Trying

Most T1Ds dealing with burnout haven’t been slacking.

They’ve been:

  • thinking about it constantly
  • trying to stay on top of everything
  • pushing themselves to keep things under control

For days.
Weeks.
Months.

And eventually, something gives.

⚠️ What Happens When You Push More

When you’re already mentally exhausted, pushing harder does something else:

  • it increases pressure
  • adds more mental load
  • makes everything feel heavier

And instead of helping…

👉 it makes things harder to maintain

🧩 Why Burnout Actually Happens

Burnout builds when:

  • there’s constant responsibility
  • no real break
  • ongoing mental effort

Even when things look “fine” on the surface…

your brain is still working in the background.

👉 This is what makes it so draining over time.

🔥 The Shift That Actually Helps

If trying harder isn’t the answer…

what is?

Reduce the pressure

Not everything needs to be perfect.

Simplify where you can

Less complexity = less mental load.

Stop treating it like a failure

Burnout isn’t you getting it wrong.

It’s a sign you’ve been carrying too much.

Give yourself space

You don’t need to fix everything at once.

Sometimes it helps to pause and actually notice what’s going on.

  • Does this feel familiar?
  • What’s been weighing on you the most?
  • Where are things starting to feel harder than they should?

If This Is Where You’re At

If trying harder has been making things worse, you’re not alone.
