At some point, a question starts to come up quietly:
👉 “Do I need support with this… or should I just handle it myself?”
Especially with something like type 1 diabetes.
Because you’re used to managing it.
Used to dealing with it.
Used to pushing through.
So it can feel strange to even ask:
👉 “Do I need help with this?”
Why This Question Comes Up
You don’t usually ask yourself do I need support out of nowhere.
It tends to show up when:
- things feel heavier than they used to
- you’re more mentally drained than usual
- you feel stuck in the same patterns
But instead of recognising that…
👉 you might tell yourself you should just try harder
👉 This is where people get stuck.
The “I Should Be Able to Handle This” Trap
A lot of people with type 1 diabetes think:
- “I’ve dealt with this for years”
- “I should be able to manage this”
- “Other people seem to cope”
So when the thought comes up:
👉 “Do I need support?”
It often gets pushed away.
And instead…
👉 they keep pushing through
Even when things feel harder than they should.
Signs You Might Need Support
This isn’t about something being “seriously wrong”.
It’s about recognising when things are building up.
Things feel like more effort than usual
Even simple decisions feel heavier.
You’re tired of thinking about it all the time
It’s not one bad moment — it’s constant.
You feel stuck in the same cycle
Trying → slipping → trying again → feeling worse
You keep questioning yourself
👉 “Do I need to just try harder… or do I need support?”
👉 This is what people don’t always connect.
What Support Actually Means (This Is Important)
Support doesn’t mean:
- you’ve failed
- you can’t manage your diabetes
- something is wrong with you
It usually means:
👉 you’ve been carrying too much on your own
And having someone to talk it through with can:
- reduce the mental load
- give you clarity
- make things feel more manageable
When It Makes Sense to Reach Out
You don’t need to wait until things get worse.
In fact, most people who ask:
👉 “Do I need support with this?”
Are already at the point where something feels off.
Not broken.
Not unmanageable.
Just heavier than it should be.
👉 This is where things start to shift.
If You’re Still Unsure

🔚 FINAL THOUGHT
You don’t need to wait until things feel unmanageable.
Sometimes the fact that you’re asking:
👉 “Do I need support?”
Is reason enough to explore it.
